The Creep: Mushrooms!

creepmushroomsJust a quick update today!  I’m going to show you how the mushrooms that were used for The Creep tileset came to be.  They were one of the trickiest sprites that had to be made and took a lot of time to get just right.

Anyone who has tried to add new map elements to EarthBound knows how crazy it is to match objects to the game’s visual style.  EB uses some sort of wonky one-point perspective, as well as an odd lighting scheme.  Instead of trying to start from scratch I decided to combine elements that existed in the game already to make my mushrooms, with the hopes of creating objects that meshed nicely with the game world.

The simple formula is shown below.

Basically I took the stalk from the SHROOM! boss enemy and combined it with a rock to create the mushrooms found in The Creep.  Since the shading was already incorporated into the rock object, I didn’t have to worry about figuring it out for myself.  The second mushroom variation is just a slight edit, where I elongated the cap and moved around the spots somewhat.

I am saying “I” a lot, but I had a lot of help from my brother with the design process.  Together, we made some mushrooms that turned out pretty great!
