Random Thoughts: March 16th

The last time I did one of these random thought dealies I was salivating at the prospect of completing the map editing phase of Unearthed. Four months later I am now looking towards the end of writing the game outline, and finally opening up the project to community involvement.

I’ll have a moderately important update coming next week sometime, followed by one of monumental importance occurring at the end of April. For now, enjoy some tidbits of information from around the interweb.

The Baldur’s Gate website was finally updated! It seems that BG I & II are getting a re-release with an enhanced game engine and new content developed by some of the creative team fom the original game. Although this is definitely great news, it was a bit underwhelming for all the hardcore fans out there who were expecting a true sequel.

BG is pretty much my favourite game of all time, so I’ll report any news about this project on my Twitter as it develops. Radistorm suggested I do a Let’s Play of the Enhanced Edition once it is released, but I doubt anyone would be interested in watching 200 hours of me gushing about how much I love turn based strategy.

Speaking of turn-based strategy, I recently caught wind of a game-in-progress by the name of The Banner Saga. I was pretty much sold as soon as I heard the game’s tagline: role-playing meets turn-based strategy, wrapped into an adventure mini-series about vikings. It also helps that the project is being developed by several ex-Bioware staffers, who worked together on the great KOTOR franchise.

I’m a big softy for turn based combat, especially when it’s executed on an isometric plane. I know, that’s a REALLY specific type of game, but results are exquisite when done properly. I really hope that this game lives up to expectations!

As a final note, please do take a moment and check out what is going on in the YouTube channel

  • Oh, damn it. I JUST bought the Baldur’s Gate games about a month ago. I haven’t even had a chance to play them yet. :\
