Longplay

Longplay: Cultivating Economically Sustainable Game Studios in Canada is a research project funded by Ontario Creates and Mitacs Accelerate that I’m undertaking as a postdoctoral fellow with Baby Ghosts and the University of Waterloo’s Department of Sociology and Legal Studies.

The core goal of this project is to study the efficacy of incubator, accelerator, and mentorship programs (i.e. support hubs) in cultivating economically sustainable studio structures in the Canadian videogame industry.

Through 2025 and 2026, I will be conducting interviews and surveys with support hub participants to gauge their expectations and discern what knowledge, networks, and resources they need to achieve their creative and professional aspirations. Once all research data has been collected, I will write a a 30-page white paper that provides resources for developers who wish to learn more about support hubs and presents best practices for their administrators. This project will develop valuable insights for those working toward sustainable growth in the Canadian industry.
