I just caught wind of an interesting new project created by Swedish retronaut Linus Akesson. Linus has created a brand new instrument called the Chipophone – a homemade 8-bit synthesizer, especially suited for live chiptune playing. The Chipophone started out as a plain ol’ organ before Akesson gutted it and added his own custom sounds to it.
Instead of listing a bunch of technical specs that most people won’t understand (the synthesizer is implemented on an ATmega88, an 8-bit microcontroller with 1 kB of RAM and 8.5 kB of ROM, for example), I’ll point you all towards a video of the instrument in action. Truly, an amazing bit of engineering.
