Adventures in 8.5×11 at In Media Res

In Media Res is a Media Commons project dedicated to experimenting with collaborative, multi-modal forms of online scholarship. Each weekday, a different scholar curates a 30-second to 3-minute video clip/visual image slideshow accompanied by a 300-350-word impressionistic response – re-purposing an existing media object and providing context through commentary.

For the website’s #FantasyCartography week, I submitted Adventures in 8.5×11 – an article documenting the past decade of the One Page Dungeon Contest. The competition is something that I’ve been following for a long time – and have even participated in on occasion – and this was a great opportunity for me to sift through hundreds of past entries. I’ve included a short excerpt of my piece below:

Amateur pen-and-paper game design is certainly not a new phenomenon. Since Gary Gygax and David Arneson began their Blackmoor adventure in 1972 – fusing Chainmail medieval wargaming with Gygax’s established Fantasy Supplement – generations of gamers have meticulously crafted their own sprawling dungeons and fantastical campaign settings.

You can check out the entire #FantasyCartography week offering on the In Media Res website.

One Page Dungeon Contest 2017: Of No Small Power

The 2017 One Page Dungeon Contest is once again upon us! Matt and I have created an entry for the now venerable contest: our third submission in the last four years. We both felt our last adventure was a little bit too large in scope, and our desire to scale things back seems to have manifested itself quite literally throughout the design of the dungeon. Behold, Of No Small Power! You can view a low-resolution preview PNG by clicking the image below, or download the PDF version for optimal print quality.

An inept wizard has used size-manipulation magic to enslave a race of tiny humanoids. The PCs must enter his diminutive realm to defeat him.

The judging for the 1PDC won’t be happening until sometime in May, but I’ll post again once the results are in. There are already quite a few submissions, and I imagine the quality will be as stellar as it has been in past years.

One Page Dungeon Contest 2015: Vesna’s Refuge

The 2015 iteration of the One Page Dungeon Contest is nearing its deadline, and Matt and I have just put the finishing touches our submission! Impressed by the maps and layouts of last year’s entries, we were inspired to create something with a bit more of a visual “punch” to it. The fruits of our labour is Vesna’s Refuge, a system neutral island adventure about evil magics, blighted forests, and deadly monsters. You can download the PDF version, or view a PNG copy below:

The judges will be, well, judging the entries over the coming weeks and the winners will be revealed in a month or so. As always, there were a ton of great dungeons this year, and I highly recommend you browse through them on this year’s contest page.
